  1. INSTALLATION
  2. ============
  3. Note that VBRUN100.DLL is required in the path or in c:\windows\system !!! 
  4. I did not add it for the ZIP version of NCOM because authors are generaly 
  5. asked to do not. The reason is that this file is available at most shareware 
  6. places anyway and it would drastically increase the ZIP file size. Please 
  7. download from well known places if you do not have it (eg. at 
  8. "ftp.cc.monash.edu.au" in "/pub/win3/util" with user name "anonymous")!

  10. Automatic Installation
  11. ----------------------
  12. Use only one of the following two installation procedures
  13.  
  14. 1) Under Windows
  15.  
  16.   I have just written a windows installation procedure with the name 
  17.   INST_WIN.EXE. Also this installation procedure uses VBRUN100.DLL. Please 
  18.   get it and copy it in the windows system directory (c:\windows\system) 
  19.   before running INST_WIN.EXE.

  22. 2) Under DOS
  23.  
  24.   I have also written as alternative INSTALL.BAT which shall be called from 
  25.   the disk or the directory where the installation files are located in 
  26.   following way:
  27.       INSTALL.BAT {drive:\NCOM-dir} {drive:\MS-Windows-dir}
  28.   An example could be
  29.       INSTALL.BAT C:\NCOM C:\WINDOWS

  32. Note that both installation procedures do not create an Icon in the Program 
  33. Manager. This has to be done manually. Note also that if the Visual Basic 
  34. Libraries (extension: .vbx) with NCOM are newer, copy them manually because 
  35. the Install Batch does not copy if the file is already there regardless
  36. of the version.

  38. Creating an Icon in the Program Manager
  39. ---------------------------------------
  40. You may use the MS-File Manager and drag the file NCOM.EXE into the 
  41. MS-Program Manager in order to create an icon there. This will automatically
  42. assign the NCOM directory as default startup directory which is necessary
  43. if you need to use the HELP menu.

  45. Using Long File Names for the Impatient
  46. ---------------------------------------
  47. After calling NCOM you may try the feature of long file names by selecting 
  48. a file and enter F6 or the rename button and enter any file name you want.
  49. It will immediately appear in the file list. That's it. Now you can work 
  50. in NCOM with the long file name as with every other file (copy, delete, 
  51. move etc.). It even works for subdirectories which you might create by 
  52. entering F7 or the MkDir button. If you have the file extension associated 
  53. with some application just double click on the long name and the application 
  54. with that file comes up.

  56. Manual Installation
  57. -------------------
  58. Both, the disk version or the ZIP file have a windows subdirectory. This
  59. subdirectory indicates the files which shall be copied into the
  60. MS-Windows systems directory (eg. "c:\windows\system"). Especially,
  61. the files "cmdialog.vbx", "mlistbox.vbx", "vbio.vbx", "vbrun100.dll", 
  62. and "d&dserve.dll" must be copied or moved there. Please check if they are 
  63. already there and, if so, if they have a newer version. You may not want to 
  64. overwrite the newer version.

  66. For trying NCOM it is a good idea to copy the sample configuration files, 
  67. such as "ncom.mnu" and "ncom.dmn" into the windows directory which enables 
  68. you to call the Menu or Dir-Menu.

  70. Please copy the rest of the files in the NCOM subdirectory (eg. "c:\ncom").
